Dr. Ellen Whalen earned her Masters (2007) and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from The College of Saint Elizabeth (2017). She is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York having worked as a counseling psychologist
Dr. Whalen has worked in school settings as a Counselor for 16 years. As part of her school work experience, she provided individual treatment, crisis intervention, group counseling and provided support to adolescents as well as their families.. Dr. Whalen has also had experience working in community mental health out-patient programs and has volunteered extensively for many local agencies. In 2011, Dr. Whalen was honored with the Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding services, professionalism and dedication to her field.
When Dr. Whalen is not seeing patients, she enjoys teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses at The College of Saint Elizabeth as an adjunct professor. Dr. Whalen has presented at several professional workshops on psychological issues.
Dr. Whalen’s approach to therapy is sculpted to the needs of her patients. In order to provide the most evidence-based practices, she has training in many different forms of therapy including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and family systems therapy. Dr. Whalen has training in person-centered and exposure therapy, and is able to provide crisis intervention. Several factors go into which method of therapy is appropriate for patients. Based on these factors, therapeutic interventions will be discussed and explored with patients in addition to their families. Dr. Whalen has training in various psychometric assessments utilized to help form appropriate diagnoses and for other evaluative purposes.
Dr. Whalen is married, she enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her adult children and various rescue pets.
